The gold leaves are loosely inlaid on tissue paper. A draught as slight as your breath can blow the loose gold leaf into a creased messed, so it is best to work with it in a closed room.
To pick up the gold leaf, use a "gilder's tip" (Da Vinci brush series 500) by brushing it across your hair a few times to collect a static charge and holding it over the leaf. Brush the leaf down onto the sized area using the gilder's tip. Excess leaf is removed and the stuck gold polished by using a "gilder's mop" (Da Vinci brush series 450).
